Some of America's most toxic companies

by Max Fisher

Every year a list of Toxic companies is released. This list highlights the worst environmental corporate offenders. Some times a company makes the list because of an isolated accident that was the cause of extreme environmental damage. In these cases, while the company is not the sole cause they are still held responsible for the clean up to both the environment and their brand's reputation. Companies who make the Toxic list for this reason are often able to recover and continue successfully after the clean up. Other companies on the list are their because of their disregard for the regulations set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency and their continual corporate view that profit is the priority no matter what the cost to the environment or people near their business.

Here are three of the companies that made the most recent Toxic list.

Massey Energy is the fourth largest coal company in the United States. This company who calls Richmond Virginia home reports annual revenues around 2 billion dollars. This coal company practices the controversial mining technique that has become known as "mountaintop removal". Many of the peaks located in the nearby Appalachian Mountains have been completely leveled. This type of mining not only has a negative impact on the aesthetics of the mountain range, the large blasts used causes chemicals and other pollutants to be introduced into near by streams. The EPA brought a suit against the company sighting more that 4,000 counts of illegal duping of coal sludge at sights across West Virginia and Kentucky. The company's continual violations of the United States Clean Water Act have made it one of the most toxic companies in America.

While Chevron may be touting themselves as a company interested in "green" technology this global brand has been struggling to make their corporate reality match their recent environmentally friendly PR blitz. Chevron was recently forced by the New York City comptroller to submit reports about their world wide environmental record. The company's recent fines have made shareholders somewhat uneasy. Perhaps one of the largest settlements Chevron has faced was in a suit brought by the Government of Kazakhstan. The US based company was forced to pay a fine of 300 million dollars. At home in the United States the company has faced many federal suits brought by both states and the federal government. At one California site alone the company has paid close to 2 million dollars in fines over the last five years.

Finally, corporate pollution is not only a problem among energy companies. J.R. Simplot Co, a major US food supplier also finds themselves on the toxic list. The company's headquarters are located in Boise Idaho. J.R. Simplot Co is responsible for supplying more than half of McDonald's French fries and other potato products. The company is involved in every aspect of their food production. When the Environmental Protection Agency discovered unlined fertilizer stock piles seeping into the groundwater at the company's fertilizer factory, they determined that the French fry manufacturer was responsible for the harmful levels of arsenic and nitrate in the Portneuf River located near the plant.
