First and foremost-a short diet disclaimer. I am still overweight (though I've lost 24 pounds in the past 10 months). Although I have done this, it was not a result of any particular diet program or structured diet philosophy. I had not subscribed to any "program" to accomplish this. I have now found a program that closely mirrors what I have done.
This article, however, is about what needs to be done and why people generally fail to lose weight or stop a diet and gain back everything that was lost--sometimes even more.
To start with, we seldom consider, with the proper diligence, what we are eating. Our lives are so stressful, that in many cases we eat for comfort. But in a very short time, the repetition becomes habitual.
You may be an exception, but as a rule, our diets are horrible, and yes, indeed, we need a change of dietary course. But first we need to understand that the foods we eat are developed and marketed to create our culinary desire. We are what the food industry wants us to eat!
Prepared foods, a huge proportion of the foods we buy, are created with ingredients that make us want more of them (like the potato chips that you can't eat just one of), and they are advertised virtually everywhere and constantly.
One of the most notorious is high fructose corn syrup, which is now found in nearly every processed food we buy, the fast-foods we eat, and even the "diet" foods we ingest to hopefully avoid actual diet programs. HFCS and its close relatives, cornsyrup and sugar (sucrose), trick use into thinking we are still hungry even after we've eaten several servings.
Our consumption of these sugars is rising every year, adding extra weight to our bodies. And because they are in virtually everything we eat, they are nearly impossible to avoid.
In addition to all the extra weight we are gaining, we have myriad medical issues to deal with, like allergies, cholesterol, heart disease, high blood pressure, insomnia, depression and diabetes; all issues that are increasing in numbers as the quality of the food we eat deteriorates. The increase in medical issues closely parallels the increase in the amount of corn used to create, process and modify what we previously considered healthy foods.
So given that we are not entirely responsible for the quality of the foods we eat, and not 100% "all in", mentally, with the idea that we need to diet, what do we do? How do we lose the extra pounds we keep accumulating? And how did I lose 24 pounds in ten months?
Here's the gist of it: too many soft drinks, too much late night snacking, and too little paying attention to how much I was eating. Water, as boring as that can be, replaced the soft drinks, and the snacking wasn't too hard to quit--not easy, by any means, but not impossible--and the pastries I love so much... well, let's just say I haven't seen many lately.
It didn't take very long--only a couple of weeks--before I started to see promising results. From there I progressed to scrutinizing everything I bought, reducing as much refined sugar as possible. I'm not done yet, still a couple dozen pounds to go, but I have lost a couple of pants sizes.
The main reasons for diet failures are in the very natures of the popular diet programs. Most are restrictive of certain diet components, if not totally exclusive. I promise you, if you try to stay on a low to zero carb, low fat, soup or grapefruit diet, you will crave something.
You may be able to stay on such a diet for a while or even a long time, but eventually one of two things will get you-either you will develop a medical complication that requires you to abandon your regimen, or you will simply give in to the cravings and feel like a failure.
When this happens the likelihood is that whatever your weight loss has been, you will gain some, all or even more back in a relatively short time. The same sort of thing happens with all restrictive diets.
