In recent years a major study into the behaviour of stem cells has been fairly widely publicized. While the greater part of this study concentrates on embryonic cells the study of adult stem cells has also been relatively vast. This study is of particular interest to anyone who may be regarding their receding hairlines with some concern. This is because this recent stem cell research could turn out to be the new hope to fight hair loss and baldness.
In fact the work being done in this area has come on in leaps and bounds in just a few years. While currently the studies are numerous and vast, it was a relatively short time ago that the isolation of the molecules first became possible. This possibility of isolation has allowed scientists to literally clone the molecules within the laboratory. These studies are now going ahead in many different countries around the world.
The capability of adult stem cells to actually duplicate themselves is, in fact, their main characteristic. After duplication the copies, so-called progenitor cells, then tend to separate whence they become specialized. In the area we are discussing here the specific progenitors will be those of the hair shaft as well as the inner and outer root sheaths.
To go into a little more detail, the process proceeds with the progenitors 'migrating' down the outer root sheath where on reaching what is known as the 'matrix' they again divide themselves many times. They then form layers that either become the structure of the follicles or become part of the epidermis (literally the skin surface).
The problem for the scientists carrying out studies of the behaviour of these cells, then becomes one of trying to work out exactly how they are directed to the particular areas where their need is the greatest. Likewise how they ultimately become specialized has to be ascertained.
A tough task indeed, nonetheless if this understanding can be reached it could lead to a significant breakthrough for both dermatologists and hair specialists. This is because it will potentially enable them to both manipulate the cycle of the hair follicle and to revive dormant ones.
Despite the apparent difficulties in understanding these processes in their entirety, scientists everywhere remain optimistic that their research will eventually lead to the realization of these major breakthroughs. Skin and hair specialists also remain optimistic that the discoveries of the scientists carrying out these studies will turn out to be of great benefit to their own specific areas of specialization.
It would appear that after examining these studies in a little more detail we have come an awfully long way since the days when the application of hippopotamus dung to the head was the best treatment anyone could get. The information that is being gathered through this research is also said to have the potential of being beneficial to sufferers of diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. However, to stick to our point, we should remain optimistic about stem cell research, the new hope to fight hair loss and baldness.
