Is your workout routine a little stagnant? Are you looking to change things up a bit? Researchers have found that your body adapts quickly to change. For this reason, you constantly need to be adding variation to your routines.
Training with bodyweight exercises is a great way to incorporate some variation into your training routine. One of my favorite exercises for building upper body strength is the push up exercise because it allows me to be creative. I utilize an extensive list of push up modifications to challenge my body in unique ways.
To perform a proper push up, ensure that your body is completely in line from head to toe, that your feet are together and that your hands are just by your shoulders. Your head should be aligned with your body as well - you should not be looking up. To perform a full repetition, start with your arms fully extended and lower yourself down until your chest is an inch off the ground. Then push yourself back up into starting position.
Adding variation to your push up routine allows you to place more emphasis on different muscle groups. For instance, positioning your hands wide (past shoulder-width), you are more effectively targeting your chest muscles. On the contrary, if you put your hands directly underneath your chest (forming a diamond with your thumbs and fingers), you place majority of the focus on your triceps.
My favorite push up variations are those done with some cool fitness tools. Push up stands are at the top of the list. They allow for more stress to be placed on the muscles which result in greater gains. They also keep your wrists aligned in a safe manner. Another great tool is the bosu ball. This half swiss ball is great for adding balance and stabilization into your training routine.
It's kind of crazy how many variations you can come up with if you really take a second to think about it.
If nothing else, then remember to always stay two steps ahead of your body. Keep it guessing with unique variations to your exercise routine. If you never let your body adapt, then you will never experience plateaus and minimum gains.
