by Martin Doyle

The bernese mountain dog is often referred to as the gentle giant because the breed is very large, but has a very gentle disposition as well as being even-tempered. The breed is being seen more in home with families that have children, because these dogs can adapt well to any environment. However, because they are large dogs, they need room to move about and are not a good choice for those that live in tiny apartments, unless you take your Bernese out for rigorous exercise daily.

You will hear people that own bernese mountain dog refer to them as "berners" because they originated in the Swiss Alps and the breed in Swiss is called "Berner Sennenhund. This is a working class breed, which means they are accustomed to and need a lot of exercise. The females when full grown weigh between 70 and 100 pounds, while the male Bernese weighs 90 to 120 pounds. In addition, the female stands 23 to 26 inches and the male between 25 and 27 inches. The male is a bit bigger and can weigh up to 20 pounds more than the female.

The daily exercise time is compulsory for the Bernese mountain dog which is basically a working dog and needs the right amount of regular exercise in order consume energy and maintain mental health; moreover, daily exercise will help the dog to focus on the job it was assigned, will make it easier to train and will avoid destructive behavior. The Bernese dogs get along very well with other animals, especially if they are raised together.

Many families consider the Bernese mountain dog the perfect pet because they have a good nature and are very gentle with children. These social dogs will appreciate any sign of affection from the human members of their family, and they will feel very well if you allow them to cuddle next to you while watching television. Through spending time with the family they will become part of the group and will soon be considered as valuable family members.

Their main health issue is arthritis in their hips and elbows, and their life span is only 6 to 8 years. They need proper exercise and a good diet, so they are kept away from overweighing, thus ensuring them a longer life span.

The breed of the bernese mountain dog has a long and thick coat that usually sheds in the summer months, when you need to daily brush your dog in order to remove the shedding hair and keep it out of falling all over you house. You will get your dog used with brushing starting from its puppy stage and you'll see it loves being brushed and will ask for this, not only during its shedding period. While usually you can use a regular brush, during the shedding period you'll need a special shedding tool to clean its thick coat from the dead hair. Families with children and having enough space in and around their houses for a large breed will find the Bernese mountain dog the most suitable to be their family pet, to accompany and protect their children.
