The 411 on Avoiding Home Repair Scams

by Adam Ciboch

It says a lot about the world in which we all currently live that we have to act with suspicion whenever we encounter something new. You might be among the few who thinks this is blowing things a little out of proportion. Even if you think this attitude is taking it a little too far, you still need to make sure you know about the dangers that do exist out there. Home repairs unfortunately have a lot of scams involved in them. Keep reading if you want some tips on what these scams are and how you can best avoid them.

One of the easiest mistakes homeowners can make with respect to home repair scams is getting ripped off on the cost of the repair. While it's great that you've presumably still gotten the repair you asked for, some repairmen will charge too much, knowing that many homeowners don't know legitimate costs of repair on certain items. The best way to avoid this is to get more than one estimate before you come to a decision about which repairman or company you're going to go with. And then, back that up with a request for the estimates in writing.

Do some research into the repair business. Go online and see what other people are saying about them. If other homeowners have been scammed in the past, you're sure to find out about it online. You can also check old phone books to see how long the place has been in business.

Inspecting the repair agreement or contract with a fine-toothed comb is key. Make sure you understand everything. If you don't, ask friends or even an attorney so you know what you're agreeing to before you sign. Leave no spaces blank for the repairman to arbitrarily fill in later either. Make sure the contract also includes the name and address of the repairman and the business, the cost of the repairs, and any sort of warranty for the work that might be included. Listing dates and times that the agreed upon work is to be completed is also ideal, whenever possible.

That's it. It's easy for homeowners to overlook these scams, particularly when the overall sense is that homeowners don't know enough about the repair process to point them out to themselves anyway. Also, never pay for the work in full until you're happy with the end result. These tips should get you started toward the successful completion of any home repair projects you have on the books.
