Deciding On A Vaccination San Jose Schedule For Your Dog

by Mavis Roach

One of the marvels of modern medicine, vaccines can give us and our pets immunity to some terrible diseases. But overuse of vaccines can be detrimental to your pet's health. Thus, pet owners need to be aware that this is a potential issue, and enlist their veterinarians in finding the right vaccination San Jose protocols for their dog.

It is important, without a doubt, to get your dog vaccinated. Many of the diseases that vaccines protect against are fatal and highly contagious. Rabies vaccines are required by law, because the disease can spread to humans. But vaccines are one of the many things in life where balance is important-- more is not better.

It used to be that all vaccines came with a 1-year expiration date. Most now come in 3-year versions, which you should request if your dog is not automatically given them. Boosters may be needed sooner than 3 years after a first shot, but second and subsequent boosters should last 3 years each.

It is still, unfortunately, common practice to vaccinate puppies at six or seven weeks of age. Some evidence exists that shows they should not be vaccinated prior to 8 weeks. If your dog comes to you and has already received vaccinations before the age of 8 weeks, don't worry. But don't start your pup on the puppy series until he or she is 8 weeks old, if it is up to you.

Most dog vaccines are combination shots. These protect against multiple diseases in the same shot. But if a vaccine includes protection against a disease that does not occur in your area, your dog might be better off with non-combination shots that cover the illnesses which he or she is at risk for.

A blood test can be performed on your dog to check his or her titers. These are the levels of antibodies against a disease in the blood, and show whether your dog is immune to certain illnesses. They might cost a little more than a booster shot, but they are better for your dog's health. With the exception of rabies vaccines, which might be mandated by law regardless of titer values, a dog with high titers should not be re-vaccinated.

Make all of your choices regarding vaccination San Jose with the help of a veterinarian. Choose another vet if you don't feel comfortable with the answers you are getting from the first one, but don't try to go it alone. Proper vaccination is what stands between your dog and some serious illnesses, and you want to get it right.
